Romney makes his case: 'Need jobs, lots of jobs'

TAMPA, Fla.?Mitt Romney launched his fall campaign for the White House with a rousing, remarkably personal speech to the Republican National convention and a prime-time TV audience Thursday night, proclaiming that America needs "jobs, lots of jobs" and promising to create 12 million of them in perilous economic times.

"Now is the time to restore the promise of America," Romney declared to a nation struggling with 8.3 percent unemployment and the slowest economic recovery in decades.

Often viewed as a distant politician, he made a press-the-flesh entrance into the hall, walking slowly down one of the convention aisles and shaking hands with dozens of delegates. The hall erupted in cheers when he reached the stage and he

waved to his shouting, chanting supporters before beginning to speak.

"I accept your nomination for president," he said, to a roar of approval. Then he pivoted into personal details of family life, recounting his youth as a Mormon, the son of parents devoted to one another, and a married man with five rambunctious sons.

He choked up at least twice, including when he recalled how he and wife Ann would awake to find "a pile of kids asleep in our room."

Romney aimed numerous jabs at President Barack Obama, his Democratic quarry in a close and uncertain race for the White House, and drew cheers when he vowed to repeal Obama's signature health care law.

"This president can tell us it was someone else's fault. This president can tell us that the next four years he'll get it right. But this president cannot tell us that you are better off today than when he took office," Romney declared.

Clint Eastwood, legendary Hollywood tough guy, put the case for ousting Obama plainly moments before Romney made his entrance. "When somebody does not do the job, you've got to let 'em go," he said to the cheers of thousands in the packed convention hall.

Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and the Democrats counter with their own convention beginning next Tuesday in Charlotte, N.C.

His own speech over, Romney was joined by running mate Paul Ryan, then their wives, and finally a stage full of their children and grandchildren. Confetti and thousands of red, white and blue balloons floated down from the rafters. They joined popular gospel singer BeBe Winans on "America the Beautiful."

Beyond the heartfelt personal testimonials and political hoopla, the evening marked one of a very few opportunities any presidential challenger is granted to appeal to millions of voters in a single night.

The two-month campaign to come includes other big moments?principally a series of one-on-one debates with Democrat Obama?in a race for the

White House that has been close for months. In excess of $500 million has been spent on campaign television commercials so far, almost all of it in the battleground states of Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, New Hampshire, Ohio, Iowa, Colorado and Nevada.

Romney holds a fundraising advantage over Obama, and his high command hopes to expand the electoral map soon if post-convention polls in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin and perhaps elsewhere indicate it's worth the investment.

Romney was often almost gentle in his criticism of Obama.

"I wish President Obama had succeeded because I want America to succeed," he said. "But his promises gave way to disappointment and division."

"This isn't something we have to

accept," he said, appealing to millions of voters who say they are disappointed in the president yet haven't yet decided to cast their votes for his Republican challenger.

"Now is the moment when we can stand up and say, 'I'm an American. I make my destiny. And we deserve better! My children deserve better! My family deserves better! My country deserves better!"

Romney's remarks came on a night when other speakers filled out a week-long portrait of the GOP nominee as a man of family and faith, savior of the 2002 Winter Olympics, savvy and successful in business, yet careful with a buck. A portion of the convention stage was rebuilt overnight so he would appear surrounded by delegates rather than speaking from a distance, an attempt to soften his image as a sometimes-stiff and distant candidate.

"He shoveled snow and raked leaves for the elderly. He took down tables and swept floors at church dinners," said Grant Bennett, describing Romney's volunteer work as an unpaid lay clergy leader in the Mormon church.

Following him to the podium, Ted and Pat Oparowski tenderly recalled how Romney befriended their 14-year-old son David as he was dying of cancer. "We will be ever grateful to Mitt for his love and concern," she said simply.

Shouts of "USA, USA" echoed in the convention hall as several Olympic medal winners came on stage, a reminder of Romney stepping in to help rescue the faltering 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City.

As for Obama, Romney said, "Many Americans have given up on this president, but they haven't ever thought about giving up. Not on themselves, Not on each other. And not on America."

Romney did not mention the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and made only the most fleeting references to social issues. He said, "As president, I will protect the sanctity of life. I will honor the institution of marriage. And I will guarantee America's first liberty: the freedom of religion."

The economy is issue No. 1 in the race for the White House, and Romney presented his credentials as the man better equipped than the president to help create jobs. Speaker after speaker testified to the help their received from Bain Capital, the private equity firm that he created?and that Democrats argue often took over companies, loaded them down with debt and then walked away with huge fees as bankruptcy approached.

"When I told him about Staples, he really got excited at the idea of saving a few cents on paper clips," businessman Tom Stemberg said of the office supply store chain he founded with backing from Bain.

Romney' offered no new information on what has so far been a short-on-details pledge to reduce federal deficits and create 12 million jobs in a country where unemployment stands at 8.3 percent.

Still, he said, "Let me make this very clear, unlike President Obama, I will not raise taxes on the middle class"?a rejoinder to one of the Democrats' most frequent accusation

Romney would have to nearly double the current, anemic pace of job growth to achieve 12 million jobs over four years. That's conceivable in a healthy economy. Moody's Analytics, a financial research operation, expects nearly that many jobs to return in four years no matter who occupies the White House, absent further economic setbacks.

Romney's steps for achieving the employment growth include deficit cuts that he has not spelled out and a march toward energy independence that past presidents have promised but never delivered.

He has called for extension of tax cuts due to expire at all income levels at the end of the year, and an additional 20 percent across the board cut in rates. But he has yet to sketch which tax breaks he will eliminate or cut to prevent deficits from rising.

Nor has he been forthcoming about where to make the trillions in spending cuts needed to redeem his pledge of major deficit reduction, or about his promise to rein in Medicare or other government benefit programs before they go broke.

Ryan, the chairman of the House Budget Committee, has called for remaking Medicare into a program in which the government would send seniors checks to be used to purchase health care insurance.

Under the current approach, beneficiaries pay premiums to the government, which then pays a part of all of their medical bills, and Democrats say the GOP alternative would expose seniors to ever-rising out-of-pocket costs.

Obama's surrogates missed no opportunity to criticize Romney, the convention proceedings or Ryan's own acceptance speech.

"He lied about Medicare. He lied about the Recovery Act," Obama's campaign manager, Jim Messina, emailed Democratic donors in a plea for cash.

"He lied about the deficit and debt. He even dishonestly attacked Barack Obama for the closing of a GM plant in his hometown of Janesville, Wisconsin?a plant that closed in December 2008 under George W. Bush."

The evening sealed a triumph more than five years in the making for Romney. He ran unsuccessfully for the nomination in 2008 after a single term as a moderate Republican governor of a liberal Democratic state.

This year, as then, he was assailed as a convert to conservatism, and a questionable one at that, as Gingrich, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and other rivals battled him for the nomination. With a superior organization and an outside group that spent millions criticizing his foes, Romney eventually emerged as the nominee in early spring.

Romney lies neck-and-neck with Obama in national polls 10 weeks before an election that should be his for the taking, given the sour economy and an unemployment rate that is lingering stubbornly above eight percent. (Aug. 29, 2012)

TAMPA, Fla. - Republican Mitt Romney is stepping up for the most important speech of his life, ready to tell an audience of millions that America's best days are ahead after years of "difficulties and disappointments, doubt and despair" under President Barack Obama.

Having grasped the GOP nomination on his second try, after years spent reaching for this moment, Romney will use his speech Thursday night at the Republican National Convention to introduce himself to a large swath of voters just tuning in to the long-running presidential contest and to claw for advantage in a race that could scarcely be any closer.

Romney hinted at his speech themes in a morning fundraising appeal emailed to supporters, and aides said the convention's final night would fill out a portrait of the GOP nominee as a successful businessman, fix-it guy for the 2002 Olympics and trustworthy candidate devoted to his family and faith.

"We believe in America, even though the last four years have been full of difficulties and disappointments, doubt and despair," Romney wrote. "We believe in America, even though President Obama's failed policies have left us with record high unemployment, lower take-home pay, and the weakest economy since the Great Depression."

The GOP nominee spent his morning visiting with extended family ? about 120 people, he guessed ? and tending to the never-ending demand for campaign cash at two meetings with donors.

There was no shortage of advice for Romney from armchair speechwriters on all sides.

Jeb Bush, the brother and son of former presidents, said it was critical for the normally reserved GOP nominee to connect with people on an emotional level ? even if he's never going to be "a new-age kind of guy."

"Where it matters is connecting with other people's concerns," Bush said in a round of morning talk show interviews. Only then, he said, will voters be ready to hear the candidate's case.

Overnight, convention planners transformed the stage, extending it about 12 feet to move the candidate closer to the audience. A clear barrier surrounded the bottom steps.

In a brief preview of Thursday night's speeches, Republican officials said members of the Mormon church, former business associates of Romney, including Staples President Tom Stemberg, and past Olympic athletes will help introduce the Republican candidate.

As part of his introduction, Romney appeared prepared to discuss his Mormon faith in more direct terms than usual, a direction signaled by running mate Paul Ryan on Wednesday night in several allusions to the duo's differing religions but "same moral creed."

The Wisconsin congressman, a deficit hawk who's become the party's darling since joining the ticket, offered a prime-time testimonial Wednesday night setting up Romney's turn on the stage one day later.

White House spokesman Jay Carney couldn't say whether Obama would watch Romney's speech, but said the president was "fully aware" of the happenings in Tampa this week. He declined to say whether Ryan's speech was factually accurate, but criticized Romney's campaign more broadly for distorting Obama's record and policy positions.

"Perhaps when the facts aren't on your side, you ignore the facts," Carney said.

The Obama campaign, for its part, was quick to pick apart Ryan's address, releasing a new Web video with a fact-check of what it said were inaccuracies in the congressman's criticisms of the president, and branding the GOP ticket wrong for the middle class. In the warm-up for Romney's speech, the Democrats also released a second Web video highlighting past criticisms of Romney on his record as Massachusetts governor and his budget priorities.

After a two-day campaign tour through college towns, the president was staying out of the spotlight Thursday, ceding center stage to Romney.

But in an interview with Time magazine released Thursday, Obama said he was hopeful for a more productive second term if re-elected, because "the American people will have made a decision. And, hopefully, that will impact how Republicans think about these problems."

"My expectation is that there will be some popping of the blister after this election, because it will have been such a stark choice," Obama said.

The president added that he needs to do a better job of communicating his goals to the American people ? both during the campaign and what he hopes will be a future inaugural address and more State of the Union speeches. The interview was conducted last week.

If history is a guide, viewership of Romney's speech ? and Obama's address to his Democratic convention next week ? will be surpassed only by the audience for their coming debates.

The first night of the GOP convention drew an estimated 22.3 million TV viewers, the vast majority over 55. The Nielsen ratings company said that figure was down from the 23.1 million who watched the first full night of the 2008 convention, which nominated John McCain. Nielsen said just 1.5 million of those who watched Tuesday's convention session were in the 18-34 age group.

The Republican convention's most rah-rah moments were unfolding as Hurricane Isaac, downgraded to a tropical storm, inflicted floodwaters and misery in rural stretches of nearby Gulf states. The slowly unfolding calamity went unmentioned by most key speakers Wednesday night, although a few asked for Red Cross donations for victims and offered prayers. The GOP had cut the convention's opening day in fear Isaac would strike Tampa, which was spared.

Ryan, 42, came on board the campaign for the White House with a reputation in Washington for taking on the sacred cows in government spending, Medicare prime among them. He's also generated plenty of excitement among conservatives who have never been fully convinced that Romney is one of them. "I think he's a rock star for the Republicans," Allie Burgin, a delegate from Wynnewood, Okla., said before the speech. And that's how he was received on the stage.

Ann Romney, in an interview with WTMJ-TV in Milwaukee taped before Ryan's speech, said Ryan and her husband are a "dynamic duo" who complement one another: "They're both very wonky when it comes to the intricacies of the budget ... You get the two of them together and they're like two pigs in slop."

In his speech, Ryan was particularly cutting in his indictment of the president, even in a convention loaded with anti-Obama rhetoric. "Fear and division are all they've got left," he said. "It all started off with stirring speeches, Greek columns, the thrill of something new. Now all that's left is a presidency adrift, surviving on slogans that already seem tired, grasping at a moment that has already passed."

In a letter sent Thursday morning to potential Democratic donors, Obama campaign manager Jim Messina said Ryan's speech "represents a huge bet by the Romney campaign ? they've decided that facts, truth and reality will not be a brake on their campaign message."

Sen. John Kerry, the party's 2004 nominee, also issued a fundraising appeal, saying Democrats need to "respond quickly and powerfully to attacks from the other side." Kerry, a decorated Vietnam War veteran, said ads from outside groups attacking his military record were "burned into my memory" and that Romney has far more to spend on advertising this time.

Romney spokesman Kevin Madden said days earlier that the nominee would discuss his Mormon religion in his convention address as part of "what's informed his values."

Ryan, a Roman Catholic, took up the matter conspicuously, and no doubt as part of the convention's carefully crafted message.

"Mitt and I also go to different churches," he said. "But in any church, the best kind of preaching is done by example. And I've been watching that example. The man who will accept your nomination tomorrow is prayerful and faithful and honorable."

Obama, asked in the Time interview what he admired about Romney, said the GOP nominee "seems to walk the walk and not just be talking the talk when it comes to his participation in his church."

Top 15 tips to secure your home

VN:F [1.9.20_1166]

Rating: 0.0/10 (0 votes cast)

One of the home-improvement projects with the greatest return on investment is the one that makes your house more secure.

Don?t wait until someone breaks in before finding the peace of mind that comes with knowing you?ve done everything you can to keep intruders out.

A handy homeowner can do a lot of the work involved in crime-proofing a house. A security professional and local home-improvement companies can do the rest. To get started, here are 15 important projects:

1. Add security doors

Security screen doors with decorative bars and heavy locks allow you to leave your entry doors open when the weather is nice or when you want to talk to visitors outside but don?t want to invite them in. Choose a model that suits the design of your home so it will say ?style? instead of ?scary neighborhood? to friends and neighbors, while adding a layer of protection.

2. Shed light

Leave your outdoor lights on overnight. Burglars don?t want anybody to see them as they crawl through your bedroom window, so they?re more likely to target a house with a dark yard. Motion-sensitive lights save energy but illuminate when anyone skulks past. And solar lights can be an affordable way to keep your property lighted up from dusk to dawn.

3. Install a better door

Replace your hollow entry doors with solid-core or sturdy steel models. You can get steel doors stamped with a wood-grain pattern or choose a smooth surface to go with the style of your house.

4. Add a mail slot

Cut a mail slot into the door. More homeowners who send and receive mail through an outdoor mailbox are reporting stolen checks and credit-card numbers.

5. Upgrade windows

If you?ve been thinking about replacing your old, single-pane windows for more energy-efficient double-pane models, don?t put it off. Double-pane windows ? especially if you opt for tempered or security glass on the first floor ? can be harder to break into than single pane. Plus, your new locks are likely to latch better than the worn-out hardware on your old windows.

6. Add smoke detectors

Protect against non-human invaders. Equip your house with carbon-monoxide and smoke alarms. If you have a security system, opt for a service that will notify authorities if it detects fire, gas or a plumbing-induced flood inside your home.

7. Secure yard equipment

Build or buy a small shed with a sturdy lock where you can store your lawnmower, blowers and trimmers.

8. Add a peephole

If you don?t already have one, drill a peephole into your front door. That way, you?ll never have to open the door without knowing who?s standing outside.

9. Change the locks

Over the years, you?ve given your front-door key to pet-sitters, baby-sitters, housekeepers, contractors and relatives ? and chances are, you?ve lost track of where some of those keys are. Know who has access to your house. Consider going high-tech with your new lock. Instead of keys, choose a lock that operates electronically, either through a pass code entered into a keypad near the door, by recognizing your fingerprint or by responding to a command from a key fob or cellphone.

10. Install a safe

Build a safe into a wall or floor. That way, it becomes part of the structure of the home and can?t be removed. In addition to having sturdy locks, built-in safes are easy to conceal under furniture or rugs. Wall safes can hide behind panels that are designed to look like and blend into the wall.

11. Add a ?safe? room

One of my contractor friends has built several ?safe? rooms in the Phoenix area. They?re usually about the size of a large closet and often are hidden behind another closet. They?re temperature-controlled for storing jewelry, furs, heirlooms and other valuables, and often have thick walls and ceilings and fire-rated doors that serve as a fire barrier.

12. Display warning signs

If you have a dog, put up a sign letting would-be intruders know he?s a big one. Advertise your security system ? although safety experts warn against using decals with the system?s brand name. A smart thief could go online to learn how to bypass your model if he knows what it is.

13. Install a security system

New wireless models are easy to install in existing homes because they don?t require the contractor to tear your walls up to hide wires. Plus, they?re portable. Unlike hard-wired systems, you can take a wireless model with you when you move. A wireless system that is run via the Internet won?t lose power when the electricity goes off during a storm.

14. Secure the pet door

Rethink your doggy door. Not only can raccoons and the neighbor?s cat walk through it any time, a small teenager could squeeze through if he wanted your Xbox or Vicodin badly enough. If you really need a pet door, arm it with a wireless window security sensor or alarm system that will make a racket whenever it opens.

15. Do some landscaping

Remove tall shrubs and trees from around your house so bad guys won?t have any place to hide. Keep hedges trimmed beneath windows. Make sure all of your home?s windows and doors are visible from the street.

Apple's mega-patent win: An Android killer?

Google, which licenses Android software to Samsung for the Korean company's hot-selling smartphones, may have reason to worry after Apple's big court victory

Apple won a major battle in its "thermonuclear war" against Google's Android last week when a nine-member jury said Samsung, the Korean handset manufacturer behind best-selling smartphones like the Galaxy S series, deliberately infringed on six Apple patents, such as pinch-to-zoom features and "bounce-back" scrolling. (Google licenses a basic stock version of the operating system Android to phone-making partners, including Samsung.) Now, Apple is seeking injunctions that would prohibit the sale of eight offending Samsung devices, including the Galaxy S II. While Samsung is expected to appeal, the ruling (which included $1 billion in damages) will surely turn the smartphone industry on its head in the coming months, forcing the Galaxy phone maker to either pay hefty licensing fees or redesign its products to further separate them from Apple devices. Can Android persevere??

Android is in big, big trouble:?Maybe Samsung didn't intentionally blatantly copy Apple,?says James Kendrick at?ZDNet, but remember: Androids "didn't start selling in significant numbers until they adopted a design similar to the iPhone." For better or worse, "for a smartphone to sell in the millions, it must be similar in form and function to the iPhone." That's what consumers want. And Samsung can no longer make phones like that.
"Must smartphones be similar to iPhone to sell?"

SEE MORE: Apple's massive patent victory over Samsung: Winners and losers

But Android isn't dead yet:?This hurts, but it isn't a "game-changing loss" for Android,?analyst Toni Sacconaghi of Sanford C. Bernstein & Co.?tells?Forbes. The smartphone market is global. Product cycles are fast. Innovation happens rapidly. There are lots of factors at play here, and that means "it is very unlikely that Apple... or any third parties could strike a mortal blow to Android through litigation" alone.
"Apple analysts call verdict an important victory in 'thermonuclear war' with Google Android"

Actually, Google has little to worry about:?Google's hardware partners in the smartphone market are quietly panicking,?says Sarah Mitroff at Wired. But Google itself maintains that Samsung's violations aren't included in Android's base code, and has gone to "great lengths" to keep its operating system distinct from iOS "with widgets, rotary and pull-tab lock screens, and an applications menu separate from the home screen." Maybe Apple will come after Android more directly in the future. But for now, Android appears to be safe.
"Should Google be running scared from Apple?"

During these two-plus decades, I have noticed that whenever people are unhappy, whenever their lives are marked by resignation, strained or failed relationships, lacking fulfillment, ineffective communication, scarcity, lacking success, anger, depression or worry?that is whenever they are NOT living their best lives, one underlying factor was ALWAYS present. That factor is low self-esteem.

Low self-esteem has its origins when we are young, typically before the age of six. It begins with someone saying or doing something that causes a child to get the idea that he or she is unlovable, unworthy, imperfect, flawed, or defective in some significant way. Whether the child buys into an unkind word or deed, perhaps experiences a bullying episode or an abusive situation of some sort, or misinterprets what others said or did in such a way that has them feel less than, not good enough, unlovable, or like they don?t belong, this initial upset has children begin to believe there is something wrong with them. They then scan for evidence to "prove" to themselves that their initial fear was correct?and, of course, they find plenty? Read more?

Abundance Prayer

When I am afraid, I ask myself:
How can I give more to life?
When I am tangled in past regrets
or frightening stories of the future,
I bring myself into the present moment
And know that I am safe.
When I am tempted to complain
I choose praise and gratitude.
I take a deep breath.
I look around and see
how rich I am in the things that count.
I look within and see my unlimited potential
I realize that every moment is filled with blessings
and every day I am alive
is a gift to be grateful for.
I remember that God is my Source
and abundance is reflected
in the faces of the people I love
and in the faces of those
I have yet to learn to love.
Eternally, this abundance says:
Every family is my family.
Every success is my success.
Every bride is my beauty
and every bridegroom my Beloved.
Every child is my new beginning
and every elder is my life ripe with experience.
Every dawn is my new day.
Every sunset is my world turning.
Every season is good
and offers its bounty to me.
Every moment is mine to embrace
for it is the Eternal Now
forever expressing in, through, and for me.
I live in the Forever Here
that is alive in all.
Translucent grace shines in us,
awake and aware of the beauty we are
as we become all we were meant to be.
And so it is.

The Four Spiritual Laws of Prosperity: A Simple Guide to Unlimited AbundanceThe Four Spiritual Laws of Prosperity: A Simple Guide to Unlimited AbundanceAn empowering message about the true meaning of prosperity-to help anyone achieve a life of material and spiritual abundance

Imagine if you could achieve a life of true prosperity, enjoying:
o a vitally alive, healthy body through which you experience relationships that are always satisfying and intimate, honest, and nurturing
o work you love so much that it's not work-it's play
o all the money you can spend

Living at this exceptional level is not only possible-it's right there for you, Edwene Gaines explains, if only you abide by the four spiritual laws of prosperity. Gaines, an ordained Unity minister, has been delivering her inspirational, life-changing message to audiences of all faiths at workshops across the country. Now she brings her powerful words to readers of this, her first book. Explaining the four spiritual laws, she shows why it is essential to:
o tithe to the person or place where you have received your spiritual nourishment
o set clear-cut, tangible goals
o forgive everyone all the time, especially yourself
o seek, discover, and follow your divine purpose-which will help you to assign significance to your life and bring a passion to all that you do

The solution to financial problems lies within, Gaines insists, and here she shows readers how to raise their abundance consciousness and free themselves from a life of deprivation and want.

US economy grew at 1.7 percent rate in 2nd quarter

(AP) ? The U.S. economy grew at a 1.7 percent annual rate in the April-June quarter, boosted by slightly stronger consumer spending and greater exports.

The Commerce Department said Wednesday that growth was marginally better than its initial estimate of 1.5 percent.

Economists expect some improvement in growth in the second half of the year after seeing more positive data in July. But most believe the economy will keep growing at a subpar rate of around 2 percent.

Growth at or below 2 percent is not enough to lower the unemployment rate, which was 8.3 percent in July. Most expect the unemployment rate to stay above 8 percent for the rest of this year.

A weak economy and high unemployment could hurt President Barack Obama re-election chances and bolster Republican candidate Mitt Romney's campaign.

The report on economic growth measures the gross domestic output, the country's total output of goods and services. It measures everything from the purchase of restaurant meals to construction of highways and bridges. The report Wednesday was the government's second look at GDP for the spring quarter. There will be a third and final estimate of second quarter GDP released next month.

The third quarter began with some promise.

Employers created 163,000 jobs in July, the most since February. Also in July, consumers stepped up retail spending, factories produced more goods and the housing recovery continued with increases in both new and previously occupied homes.

The upward revision to second-quarter growth was largely because consumers spent at a slightly faster pace than first estimated. Consumer spending grew a 1.7 percent rate, better than the 1.5 percent initial estimated. Exports, which add to growth, were also stronger, growing at a 6 percent rate.

Government spending, which has been a drag on growth for the past two years, contracted again in the second quarter. But the decline at an annual rate of 0.9 percent was less than the initial estimated drop of 1.4 percent. That reflected a much smaller dip in defense spending than first estimated.

All of the changes boosted economic output by $6.5 billion more than previously estimated, leaving total GDP at $13.56 trillion, after adjusting for inflation, in the second quarter.

5 Tips to Become a Better Bass Fisherman

August 28, 2012 10:00 AM Text Size: A . A . A A lot of guys sort of know how to catch large-and smallmouth bass. But the anglers in Bassmaster pro tournaments obsess over the details because landing one extra fish can mean big money. Here are five tips from the best.

DON'T GET COMFORTABLE

The first thing amateurs do wrong, they say, is fall in love with their favorite fishing spot and go-to lure. Remember the 7-pound bass you caught in that magical bay using a plastic worm while wearing your dad's lucky Brooklyn Dodgers cap? Coincidence. "I won't spend more than 10 minutes in the same spot fishing the same way, unless I've gotten a positive response," says Kevin VanDam, a seven-time Bassmaster Angler of the Year.

RELISH GRAY DAYS

"Bass are low-light predators," says Kevin VanDam. Go fishing "when the wind is blowing or it's cloudy, or just early in the morning or late in the evening." In low light a bass may chase a lure that is 20 feet away.

AGITATE YOUR FISH

Bass don't always bite because they're hungry. "A lot of times it's a straight aggressive reaction because you annoyed him," says VanDam. Drop the lure near the fish and move it erratically.

REEL IT IN SLOWLY

"Most amateurs fight a fish way too hard from the get-go," 2009 Bassmaster Classic champion Skeet Reese says. "They never stop reeling and they break a fish off." But don't allow the line to go slack. That can let the fish spit the lure.

... OR JUST CHEAT

The Alabama five-lure rig was banned from big tournaments earlier this year. It just made catching bass too easy. Now, there's no need to tell your fishing buddies that, but do check local rules on multilure rigs.

How (and why) you should enable two-step verification on your Dropbox account

57 min.

After some security woes, the folks at Dropbox have finally made two-step verification available to their users. Here's what that means, why it's important?and how to use it.

Two-step (or two-factor) verification means that logging into an account?requires two proofs of identity ? typically a password and a temporary code sent to a cellphone or generated by an app.?This process keeps?your account safe even if your password is somehow compromised (or if the cellphone which receives the temporary codes is misplaced). Without both items, it's not possible to log into the account.

In order to enable two-step verification on your Dropbox account, you'll need to sign into the Dropbox website and open your account menu (by clicking on your name, in the upper-right corner). Once in there,?open the settings and click on the "security" tab. In the "account sign in" section, you'll find the option to turn on two-step verification.?You'll be asked to enter your Dropbox password and then get the option of receiving your temporary security codes via text message or by using a mobile app. You'll also be prompted to write down a?backup code, which you should keep somewhere safe?? so that you have it in case your phone ever disappears.

And that's it. After you've gone through these steps, you'll use your password and a temporary security code to log into Dropbox. And you'll rest easily, knowing that your account is far more secure.

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Inside Australian PM's political problems is a nugget of workplace ...

The Australian Prime?Minister, Julia Gillard, has been under?intense media pressure?over an issue concerning her conduct as a lawyer around 17 years ago.It involves legal work for unions, her personal relationship at the time with a union official who has been described as?"dodgy"?and of most relevance to this blog, workplace safety.

Missed in all the debate is that the workplace safety issue seems to support the assertions of many in the business and industry associations that OHS is frequently used by trade?unions?as an excuse for action in other areas. ?These other areas are usually industrial relations but in this instance OHS was used to mask a unionist's alleged misuse of member and industry funds.

In 1995, Julia Gillard was asked to?establish?a fund for an official of the Australian Workers Union, Bruce Wilson. ?The fund was to raise money to support a re-election campaign for union officials who would be campaigning on the basis of improving the workplace safety conditions of members. ?It appears that after this fund was established, Wilson allegedly misused the fund for his own gain and not in the context of workplace safety.

"Mr?Wilson?was accused of rorting hundreds of thousands of dollars designated for the?union?and siphoning the money into an account established by his lawyer, Ms Gillard. Some of the money was used allegedly to buy a house in Fitzroy. "
At a long media conference on 23 August 2012 the Prime?Minister?was asked about the fund and workplace safety. ?Below are extracts from?the transcript.
"JOURNALIST: Did you help to draft the document that you knew was false because the purpose of the association was fundraising for a union election, not workplace safety, as stated in that document?
PM: ....My understanding of the purpose of this association was to support the re-election of union officials who would run a campaign saying that they wanted re-election because they were committed to reforming workplaces in a certain way, to increasing occupational health and safety, to improving the conditions of the members of the union.
That was my understanding of the purpose of the association, and so I provided legal advice for the association. ....."
"JOURNALIST: Ms Gillard, the Melbourne house that was later bought with funds from this?association. Can you tell us about how much you knew about that house, your involvement in that?house and whether you knew it was paid for by the association and how that relates to workplace?safety?
PM: .......My understanding about that house was that it was being purchased by Mr Blewitt. It was being?purchased as an investment property. It was purchased on the understanding that Mr Wilson?would be the tenant of the property and that?Mr Blewitt was in a position with a mortgage like an?ordinary person to purchase the property."

Business and industry associations have for many years asserted that workplace safety issues are used as an industrial relations tool. ?The current political storm in Australia re-illustrates one instance of a trade union masking general re-election fundraising as a workplace safety?initiative. ?This does not?verify?the business and industry associations assertions about OHS but it adds weight to those assertions.

Is the evidence valid?

"..the fact remains that safety issues are often inappropriately used as levers in an?attempt to further unrelated industrial ends. The scope for this must be reduced and if possible?eliminated." (page 104, Vol. 6)

However this "fact" is based primarily on the submissions from construction companies and industry bodies and may be a manifestation of the "effective frequency"?effect, purposely or subconsciously,?rather than the establishment of a truth or fact.

The Royal Commission quotes many submissions on the issue but the many equivocations in both private and government quotes emphasis the "potential" and what "may happen" rather than facts.

Grocon says

"...that?on some occasions?the?assertion?of ?safety? is used as a?smoke screen for what is really an industrial issue." (emphasis added) (page 97. Vol 6)

The Commonwealth of Australia dots is submission with "the?potential?for use (or abuse) of OHS concerns by unions..." and "....such action?may?lead to OHS concerns...."?(emphasis added) (page 97. Vol 6)

Even when there is a heading of "Evidence of misuse of occupational health and safety issues for unrelated industrial ends", equivocations abound. ?Minutes of a meeting with the Construction Safety Managers and Officers Association of Queensland Inc says:

"...the participants considered that the building industry unions in?Queensland often exploited a concern about safety for other industrial purposes. In?their experience, the unions often either manufactured or exaggerated a question?about safety, or linked the resolution of a genuine question about safety to industrial?questions."?(page 98. Vol 6)

The Royal Commissioner, Terence Cole, states that

"My own investigations during this Commission have confirmed that there is widespread?exploitation of occupational health and safety issues by unions in efforts to secure unrelated?industrial ends. Some examples dealt with in more detail in the case studies will suffice."?(page 100. Vol 6)

No?references?are made to these case studies and it would take considerable time to verify or contest Cole's investigations, a task that does not seem to have been undertaken but is sorely needed.

It is also important to note the distinction in the heading quoted above about using OHS for "unrelated industrial ends". ?This distinction seems to be lost in much of the industrial relations debate. ?How many instances of disputes arising from OHS issues have been found to be legitimate?

Effective Frequency - Truth through repetition of falsehoods

In one area of public policy and?corporate?decision-making, there is the push for "evidence-based decision making" and in another there is the application of advertising technique of repeating a belief so?frequently?and ardently that that belief can become a truth or generates a "need" - "effective frequency". ?Workplace safety seems to be caught in the middle. ?Every time someone states that "OHS is used as an industrial relations tool", evidence should be requested. ?Making this request, asking the questions, is?likely?to reveal that the evidence is anecdotal and cannot be traced to a specific instance or set of circumstances. ?It is possible that the "evidence" could turn out to be no no more than a FOAF -?evidence?from a Friend Of A Friend.

Behind many of the accusations of the Prime Minister's conduct is a cynicism that Julia Gillard must have known of the intended purpose for the funds she established. ?Some are saying that "everyone knows that such fundraising methods were dodgy" and by implication workplace safety, as advocated?through?the trade union movement, is also dodgy and always undertaken for ulterior motives. ?Often these comments are insulting to the safety professionals and advocates but no one, other than trade unionists, feels able or confident to contest these slurs.

There are many lessons from the Prime Minister Gillard's current political problems and although, admittedly, workplace safety is a very minor part of those problems, it should not be overlooked. ?The media has repeatedly resurrected claims about her conduct as a lawyer and dealings with Bruce Wilson and is?likely?to continue to do so, so workplace safety will also be dragged along, reinforcing its supposed manipulation for industrial means. ?Each time this occurs, we must ask for evidence so that myths are not perpetuated.

Lilly heart drug Effient fails to carve new niche

MUNICH (Reuters) - Eli Lilly's new heart drug Effient failed to beat the older product Plavix in a head-to-head clinical study, dashing hopes for its expanded use in treating less critically sick heart patients.

The finding, released at a medical meeting on Sunday, is good news for rival AstraZeneca, whose competitor product Brilinta did show an edge over Plavix in a comparable group of patients in an analysis published last year.

The battle among the different blood-thinning drugs, which are all designed to prevent dangerous clots in heart patients, has moved up a gear this year with the expiry of patents on Sanofi and Bristol-Myers Squibb's Plavix.

That has opened the door to cut-price generic versions of Plavix, or clopidogrel, on both sides of the Atlantic, upping the ante on the newer rivals to prove they really offer a distinctive edge.

Lilly and its partner Daiichi Sankyo had hoped to prove that Effient was a better option for patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) who do not get a stent to open blocked arteries or bypass surgery.

ACS covers a range of serious conditions, including heart attacks and unstable angina, caused by a sudden reduction of blood flow to part of the heart.

In fact, the large study funded by the two companies and involving more than 9,000 patients found there was no difference between Effient and Plavix in preventing heart attacks, strokes and deaths. Both drugs were tested alongside aspirin.

There was also no difference in serious bleeding complications, which is always a risk with blood-thinners.

There was a lower risk of adverse events in patients on Effient after 12 months of treatment, but this trend was not conclusive and lead investigator Dr Magnus Ohman of Duke University Medical Center said further exploration of the finding was needed.

SURPRISING RESULT

Most trials evaluating anti-clotting drugs for ACS have focused on patients undergoing invasive procedures, usually getting a stent - a tiny wire mesh tube that is left in the coronary artery to prevent it from closing up again.

But some 40 percent of patients who are not in urgent need of such invasive intervention are managed solely with drug therapy, and it had been thought that they should do better on a newer and more potent medicine like Effient.

Daiichi research head Glenn Gormley said the trial result was "not the outcome we anticipated" and medical experts at the European Society of Cardiology annual congress, where the findings were reported, agreed the result was unexpected.

"The outcome is a bit surprising because we think usually that more aggressive therapy in the face of acute coronary syndrome would lead to less adverse outcome - but the data is what the data is," said Dr William Zoghbi, president of the American College of Cardiology.

Effient was launched three years ago and the drug has taken off more slowly than many analysts expected, with worldwide sales last year of $302.5 million. Analysts, on average, expect sales to reach $1.1 billion by 2016, according to Thomson Reuters Pharma.

The results of the Effient study were published simultaneously online by the New England Journal of Medicine.

92% Safety Not Guaranteed

Question: If you could go back in time, what time would you return to and why? Normally I answer, or vaguely answer, my own questions in these reviews but I?m not going to on this one. I am not an overly nostalgic person unless it has to do with a film or a band. Plus, after seeing Safety Not Guaranteed this past weekend, I learned a valuable lesson. Sorry if this confuses anyone but you will just have to see Safety Not Guaranteed to understand what I am referring to?.or trying to, at least. I have wanted to see this film for a long time. There was just something about the story that drew me to it ? not too long ago I even posted the preview on here; and I save those posts usually for films that I think will be interesting, unique or that tell a story that will move me. This one did, not drastically, but enough to get me out of my writer?s block (fingers crossed) and make me contemplate parts of my life. That?s what I want from most films, art, books, etc?an opportunity to think; notice something you hadn?t before; and look upon an idea with a fresh perspective, etc? Safety Not Guaranteed took on an age-old idea: looking back on your past with regret and hoping you can change things so you wouldn?t be unhappy now. And the filmmakers made a charming, perfectly decent film that will just make you smile. Plus, they added the idea of time travel. Who wouldn?t like that, right? So, I ask again, would you want to go back in time and why? For most, I believe, the reasoning will involve another person: a partner, girlfriend, boyfriend, parent or someone with whom you hurt or they did something that haunts you, still. We all make mistakes. Mistakes are thrust upon us. We fall in love with the wrong person, or the right person, and hearts get broken no matter what. Also, we can be cruel to another. Admit it ? we have ALL been there. We are human. Safety Not Guaranteed represented several aspects of people?s regret and/or searching for the cure to change their current situation. And I think most will be able to relate. Now the next question(s): Could we fix it? Should we fix it? Would we be better off if we changed these brief, few moments of the past? Or are we where we are supposed to be? Thinking about regrets is enough to drive you a little mad. And that?s how the actor in this film, Mark Duplass? character, is portrayed. Someone who must be insane because he puts a classified ad in the paper requesting a partner go back in time with him. He declares it will be dangerous and your safety will not be guaranteed. His ad intrigues a magazine editor ? enough to send a writer and two interns to check the story out. There are a couple other character in this film that display the same sort of desire to change their present by reaching towards the past: The young intern, Darius, played by Aubrey Plaza and her boss, Jeff, played by Jake. M. Johnson. Both these characters represented the vast differences on why someone would want to go back in time. I liked both characters, a lot. In fact, Jeff was one that kept the comedy going in this film. He?s the type of guy you don?t want to like but he evokes sympathy when you aren?t expecting. Darius is a sarcastic girl that has a deep, hidden secret on why she is unhappy now. As for the rest of the story, no more details. Just go see this film. It is slated as a comedy, and it was absolutely funny at parts but it is not slap stick or a joke every few minutes type of film. The humor is subtle and well placed. Safety Not Guaranteed showed real humor, the humor we all have in our lives. The absurdity that is ever present ? that?s what makes it a comedy. However, I would categorize this as a drama as well. And that?s a compliment. Bottom line: Just give me a good story, tell it well and with respect (especially for the audience), and you?ve got a fan in me. Safety Not Guaranteed did all three. Well done! My favorite thing: There might too many things to list here. I just really, really liked this film. Okay, I laughed OUT LOUD when Jeff raises his fists in the air. His reaction to what was happening just kept me smiling and smiling. My least favorite thing: I got nothing this time. Directed by Colin Trevorrow, Big Beach Films, 2012 Genre: Comedy Starring: Aubrey Plaza, Jake M. Johnson, Mark Duplass, Karan Soni, Jeff Garlin and Kristen Bell. 'Weird week' in Lubbock: Judge's 'civil war' comments make Republicans cringe

Lubbock Avalanche-Journal

Lubbock County Judge Tom Head, right, talks with Texas Governor Rick Perry in Lubbock, Tex. on May 8.

By Kari Huus, NBC News

The arid West Texas community of Lubbock found itself in the national spotlight after a county judge asserted on television that if President Barak Obama is reelected, the country will be under threat of invasion by the United Nations and should brace for a possible civil war.

The comments, made by Lubbock County Judge Thomas Head in a bid to raise local property taxes, have prompted Democrats to call for his resignation. They?ve also generated a busy, and awkward, week for some local Republicans.

"It?s been a weird week," said Carl Tepper, chairman of the Lubbock County Republican Party, who has been deluged by calls from around the country.

"I don?t agree with the tax raise. I don?t agree that the U.N. is invading the U.S. I?m not a conspiracy theorist," Tepper told NBC News Friday. "The great majority of Lubbock, Texas, does not agree with Judge Head on this issue."

The furor started on Tuesday evening when Head appeared on a local Fox television station to drum up support for a 1.7 percent tax increase to bolster the county budget. Head?s comments veered into his concerns about civil unrest in the event of Obama?s election to a second term.

"He?s going to try to hand over the sovereignty of the United States to the U.N., and what is going to happen when that happens?" Head said. "I?m thinking the worst. Civil unrest, civil disobedience, civil war maybe. And we?re not just talking a few riots here and demonstrations. We?re talking Lexington, Concord, take up arms and get rid of the guy."

"Now what?s going to happen if we do that, if the public decides to do that? He?s going to send in U.N. troops. I don?t want ?em in Lubbock County. OK. So I?m going to stand in front of their armored personnel carrier and say, 'You?re not coming in here'."

On Wednesday, Head said his remarks were taken out of context, and he meant them as a worst-case scenario, according toa?report in?Lubbock Avalanche Journal.?

He did not respond to NBC calls for comment.?

At a news conference on Thursday, Kenny Ketner, chairman of the Lubbock County Democratic Party charged that Head?s impartiality as a judge had been violated as a result of the comments,?according to the Journal report.?

"Public officials have greater responsibility not to spout off about conspiracies and extremist fantasies,"?Ketner said.

"Judge Head?s statements on the United Nations invasion raise serious questions about his mental competency to hold elected office," according to the Texas state Democratic chair Gilberto Hinojosa, cited by a report in the Houston Chronicle.

Head?s comment is "not only ridiculous, it?s dangerous. It?s crystal clear that Judge Head should resign,"?Hinojosa added.

Head's is an elected county judge; his position is not slated for a vote until 2014.?

Tepper, of the Lubbock Republican Party, said he does not expect efforts for Head?s removal to gain any traction.

He said that while most people disagree with Head?s comments, there are concerns about federal policies that affect Lubbock, a community 300 miles west of Dallas that relies heavily on ranching and oil. ?

"I have had a lot of people who are concerned with the Obama administration and their national environmental agendas," said Tepper. "This is an energy part of the country. When drilling is limited (by regulations) and the use of coal is limited, that is of great concern to the voters and the people of West Texas."

But he said Lubbock, Texas, was really "Lubbock, America," a nice family oriented community that has oil, cotton and cowboys, as well as sophistication and a diverse set of views.?

"We are very conservative, but I want to stress we have respect for the president, and for the federal government,"?Tepper said. "If we don?t like the president, we will try to beat him in the voting booth."

Embattled House, Senate candidates to get boosts from GOP convention speaking spots

Several embattled House and Senate candidates will get a potential boost next week when they take the national stage as speakers at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla.

Rep. Quico Canseco, who is locked in what the Houston Chronicle calls ?the most competitive congressional race in Texas,? will speak at the convention.

So will Rep. Dan Benishek of Michigan, who is running in a race that the Cook Political Report calls a ?pure toss up.? Kieth Rothfus, another speaker, and the Republican candidate in Pennsylvania?s 12th District, is running in a district that is also a toss up.

Other speakers, like Rep. Sean Duffy and Indiana?s Jackie Walorski, are in Republican-leaning districts but are being targeted by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

Still others, like Kentucky?s Andy Barr, California?s Ricky Gill, and John Archer of Iowa?s 2nd District, are running in districts where the Democrat is favored.

Rep. Connie Mack, the Republican Senate candidate from Florida, and North Dakota Senate candidate Rick Berg, are simply locked in tight races.

Putting people who might not win on the stage may not be seem like the best strategy, but showcasing embattled candidates is ?standard for both parties,? according to Republican strategist Phillip Stutts.

?It?s usually good for these candidates, both for press at home and for fundraising ? which is crucial in tight races,? he added.

?Every convention wants to elevate the candidates that can benefit,? said strategist Dan Hazelwood. ?Being viewed as an articulate somewhat national figure is always a good thing if you take care of business at home. Getting a little press pop is a good thing.?

A speaking slot doesn?t necessarily translate into a bump in the polls, cautioned Trey Grayson, director of the Harvard Institute of Politics. But, he said, it?s a nice thing to be able to tell donors and supporters.

?It gives the speaker an opportunity to say to her donors, volunteers, local media that the national party cares enough about this race and my chances that they gave me a speaking opportunity,? he pointed out. ?That?s a nice boost. It doesn?t matter that you only had a minute to speak or that most people weren?t listening. It only matters that you got a chance. The fact that the speaking opportunities are usually early means the candidate can then leave and go back home to campaign.?

?The ?validation? bump is helpful in building a better organization or raising more money that might ultimately help get more votes,? he said.

It also gives the candidate the opportunity to target the select group of people that are watching and paying attention.

?In reality, those watching these speeches are partisans,? said Republican strategist Chuck Warren. ?So these believers are looking for rising stars.?

?Let?s take Mia Love, for example,? he said referring to the Utah congressional candidate who has a prime-time speaking spot. If elected, she would be the first black, female Republican in Congress.

?She is a gifted speaker,? Warren said. ?She speaks with enthusiasm and excites an audience. If she knocks it out of the park, it could spark a significant small donor fundraising increase from out-of-state donors.?

Love, who trailed her Democratic opponent, Rep. Jim Matheson, by 15 points in a June poll, could probably use it.

Putting embattled candidates on the stage is also a good thing for presidential nominee Mitt Romney for a number of reasons.

?It tells us that these candidates don?t fear being associated with Romney,? Hazelwood said. ?They are feeling good vibes at home about the Romney campaign and ticket. It makes it easier for the party with everyone rowing in the same direction with head held high.?

Given the negative attention being paid to Democratic candidates opting to skip their party?s convention, the show of solidarity is a good thing.

?It also may suggests that Romney ? a successful manager and leader ? believes he will have difficulty accomplishing anything in D.C. without a team that supports his principles and vision,? Warren said. ?For example, it will be very difficult for a Romney administration to get our deficits and national debt under control without Republican majorities in Senate and House.?

On a purely logistical level, Grayson said, it?s a useful way to fill the speaking spots outside of prime time that bigger names might find less desirable.

?It?s also a chance for the party and the nominee to help spotlight these candidates. ?This is our future. We need them in Congress.? That sort of thing,? he said. ?It?s a good way to fill out the convention agenda, especially because the candidate speakers are appreciative of the speaking opportunity. They don?t care that it?s not prime time.?

The Romney campaign referred questions to the convention.

?We are very excited about the lineup of candidates speaking at the convention,? said convention press secretary?Kyle Downey.
