Job Description Summary: Provide administrative leadership for the Mathematics Department.
The Mathematics Department exhibits excellence in teaching with impressive performances of graduating seniors on the ETS MFT exit examination and in the Putnam competition. The department is active in research on a variety of topics, both in the discipline and in the education of the discipline. There is great emphasis placed on undergraduate involvement in scholarship. The faculty publish in highly regarded journals and have been successful at obtaining external grant funding supporting departmental and college wide initiatives. The department is committed to university and community service,sponsoring both middle school and high school mathematics competitions yearly. Our strategic plan is centered on excellence in undergraduate education and supports many student focused activities in addition to undergraduate research, including a biweekly luncheon/colloquium series, and student chapters of MAA and Pi Mu Epsilon. The current department numbers 19 full-time and 10 part-time faculty members.
The department offers a baccalaureate major in mathematics and also teaches courses that support a Master's in Curriculum and Instruction for mathematics teachers through the College of Education. There are three options for the baccalaureate degree: pure mathematics, applied mathematics, and mathematics education. Students pursuing the applied mathematics degree are required to develop a concentration of courses in a scientific discipline such as chemistry, economics, actuarial science, or computer science. Students who choose the mathematics education option earn a B.S. in mathematics and certification to teach secondary mathematics.
Minimum Qualifications:
A Ph.D. in mathematics or statistics is required with experience consistent with hiring at a level of full professor including some administrative experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
Academic Administrative experience is preferred. A strong commitment to supporting quality teaching and research at an undergraduate institution is expected. Applicants in all areas of mathematics and statistics will be considered.
Essential Duties Summary :
This appointment reports to the Dean of the College of Science and Technology. The responsibilities include administration, scholarship, service, and teaching. Administrative duties involve managing day-to-day operations of the department including: budget management, hiring faculty, creating course schedules, and mentoring faculty, particularly those seeking promotion and/or tenure. Maintenance of an active scholarly agenda, including activities leading to publications is expected. The Head will participate in various service opportunities within the department, college, university and community. The teaching duties of the Head may cover a broad range of undergraduate courses.
