To prevent a ?catastrophic event,? Coast Guard will establish safety zone around huge new offshore platform in Gulf of Mexico

Olympus Tension
Leg Platform

To minimize the possibility of a ?catastrophic event,? the U.S. Coast Guard plans to establish a 500-meter safety zone around the ?Olympus Tension Leg Platform,? which Shell Exploration and Production Company plans to operate in a deepwater area of the Gulf of Mexico.

The huge platform, which set sail on July 13 on a 10-day, 425-mile voyage from Offshore Services in Ingleside, TX, to Mars B field in the Gulf, will operate in what is called Mississippi Canyon Block 807.

?Shell Exploration and Production Company indicated that it is highly likely that any allision with the facility would result in a catastrophic event,? reported the Coast Guard in a notice of proposed rulemaking it published in the Federal Register on July 18. (An ?allision? is the act of dashing against or striking upon.) To prevent such a disaster, the Coast Guard intends to prevent vessels from entering a 500-meter zone that will surround the platform.

?The proposed regulation would reduce significantly the threat of allisions, oil spills, and releases of natural gas and increase the safety of life, property, and the environment in the Gulf of Mexico by prohibiting entry into the zone unless specifically authorized by the Commander, Eight Coast Guard District,? says the notice.

The public is invited to submit comments by August 19 HN 2013 7 19 Olympus platform by visiting www.regulations.gov and citing docket number USCG-2013-0070 in the search box.

Further information about this proposed safety zone is available from Rusty Wright, of the Coast Guard, at 504-671-2138 or rusty.h.wright@uscg.mil.

Who Needs Nails When You Can Meld Wood in a Vortex of Thread?

Most furniture has the business parts of its joints buried deep inside it somewhere. Screws hidden in hollow metal frames, screws driven deep into wood. The furniture made by Anton Alvarez wears its colorful thread joints on the outside. And the machine used to tie it all up is a beast.

Anglers cast their lines to help fight childhood cancer

Expect big catches and big names at Little Lake for this year?s Fishing for the Cure, an annual competition to raise money to fight childhood cancer.

Professional anglers Dave Mercer and J.P. DeRose will return to cast their lines and reel in some donations. Former NHL players Kris King and Dave Reid will also be in one of the 10 boats in this year?s competition, as will local lacrosse star Shawn Evans.

The event begins at noon July 18 with activities at Del Crary Park, including Bassmasters fishing lessons and a barbecue. The boats set out at 3:30 p.m. and the official weigh-in will be 4 p.m.

For $1,000, sponsors can fish with a pro angler and celebrity athlete during the competition. There will be a 6 p.m. celebrity dinner and auction at Holiday Inn with $60 tickets sold at the door.

Fishing for the Cure began four years ago in memory of Courtney Morrison, a 16-year-old St. Peter Catholic Secondary School student who died of Hodgkin?s lymphoma in 2009.

?When she was in the hospital she asked us not to let anyone forget about her, not to let anyone forget her name, to keep her memory alive,? says Murray Henderson, Courtney?s stepfather, who founded The Henderson Family Courtney Morrison Legacy Fund. ?We wanted to do something in her memory.?

Last year the tournament raised $10,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada.

?I thought this would be a very unique way to keep Courtney?s name alive and to raise money and awareness about childhood cancer,? says Henderson.

He hopes more children will attend this year?s event, particularly those who have been affected by cancer.

?Courtney hated seeing any kids being cooped up in the hallway of Sick Kids Hospital when they could have been out enjoying the weather,? says Henderson. ?I hope this event gets more kids of the computer and outside to enjoy Peterborough?s environment.?

Sony's four pillar approach to game publishing on PlayStation 4 aims to level the playing field

Sony's already said that it's making game publishing on PlayStation 4 even easier than it is on the PlayStation 3, but Senior Account Manager of Development at Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Agostino Simonetta today explained exactly what that means. Sony's apparently applying a "four pillar" approach to publishing, as follows:

    1. "Every developer is a publisher"
    2. "Equality of opportunity"
    3. "Personal relationship"
    4. "No hurdles, just games"

It's this multi-tiered approach that Sony believes will attract developers to the PlayStation 4. "Every single developer is a publisher, as far as we're concerned. We don't separate, we don't segregate indies from traditional publishers," Simonetta said, in reference to the current console generation's "segregation" of indie (primarily digital) games from more traditional publishers (primarily disc-based). More specifically, individual devs can work with Sony one-on-one to establish promotions and other details. Perhaps most importantly, all developers will hear back on publishing approval within one week from Sony. Head to the source link below for more details from Simonetta, straight out of the annual Develop conference.

Heavily armed suspect nabbed near campus 'appeared to be angry,' prosecutors say

Ted S. Warren / AP, file

Justin Jasper, 21, at a bail hearing in Seattle on Friday.

By Alastair Jamieson, Staff writer, NBC News

A man caught with homemade firebombs and other weapons in Seattle was charged with possessing an incendiary device, two stolen guns and a stolen truck, prosecutors said early Wednesday.

Justin Jasper, 21, from Nevada, was found in the truck along with Molotov cocktails, guns and body armor when he was arrested near the University of Washington campus early Thursday.

He is being held in King County, Wash., in lieu of $2 million bail.

?He appeared to be angry about several international political events,? the King County Prosecutor?s office posted in an update?at 11 p.m. PT Tuesday (2 a.m. ET Wednesday).

He also had maps to three Seattle campuses, a machete and several knives, authorities disclosed on Friday.

A Nevada man was arrested in Seattle, where local police found him in a stolen truck filled with weapons, body armor and what appeared to be bombs.

Investigators also uncovered propaganda materials - including a recording of a podcast - in which Jasper allegedly addressed the political upheaval in Syria and Brazil and expressed anti-government sentiments, according to the county's senior deputy prosecutor Andrew Hamilton.

"There was a sheet of paper that had block, printed letters. It said something to the effect of: Are you aware of the Syrian revolution?" Hamilton said. "It was definitely political in nature."

The Seattle Times reported that the stolen vehicle belonged to Erik Henderson, a long-haul trucker from Butte, Montana, who had given Jasper a ride from Idaho and allowed him to stay at his home.

Henderson said Jasper described himself as an ?anarchist,? the Seattle Times reported.

?But you hear that from a lot of college-aged kids these days," Henderson told the newspaper.

Jasper will be arraigned on July 22 at the King County courthouse, the prosecutor's office said.

Boy robs Colo. State Fair in Batman costume

PUEBLO, Colo. (AP) ? A 16-year-old boy wearing a Batman shirt and mask broke into a building at the Colorado State Fair, then turned himself in to police after seeing his likeness on the news.

The Pueblo Chieftain reported that the boy is one of three accused of breaking into the Fair's VIP building early Thursday (http://bit.ly/1aMIypL ). The trio took televisions, a laptop and an empty cash register.

The suspects managed to lock themselves in the building and had to break out.

KRDO-TV aired surveillance video of the suspect dressed as Batman. After the video aired, the boy turned himself in to police. Authorities plan to seek charges including burglary and criminal mischief.

The boy wasn't named because of his age. Police were still seeking the other two suspects.

Analysis: Asylum deadline looms for Snowden; might he stay in Russia?

Now that the presidents of Nicaragua, Bolivia and Venezuela have offered to grant NSA leaker Edward Snowden asylum, it's unclear what will happen to him or where he will go. But wherever it is, it won't come soon enough for Russian President Putin. NBC's Jim Maceda reports.

    Analysis

By Jim Maceda, Correspondent, NBC News

MOSCOW, Russia ??As the deadline looms for Edward Snowden to accept Venezuela?s offer of asylum, the self-declared NSA leaker must soon choose his next move ? assuming he moves anywhere at all.

The fugitive still hasn?t been seen at Sheremetyevo Airport??and certainly nowhere near an airplane ??but the rumors about his whereabouts are flying: That a three-hour delay for Monday?s Aeroflot flight from Moscow to Havana must be suspicious; that, according to Al Jazeera?s website Snowden is already in Venezuela; that the 24-hour deadline imposed by Venezuela Sunday was just a ruse to throw everyone off track.

Despite applying to at least 20 countries for refuge to avoid U.S. prosecutors, Snowden?s choices now seem to boil down to a "trifecta" offer of asylum by three leftist and vocally anti-Washington, Latin American nations: Venezuela, Nicaragua and Bolivia. And maybe also Iceland.

However, what if Snowden decides that he wants to stay in Russia?

??He can say, ?I want to stay here?,? said Fyodor Lukyanov, a seasoned Kremlin-watcher and editor of the journal "Russia in Global Affairs." ??Why not? He can say ?I don?t trust Cubans. I don?t trust Venezuelans, I trust Russia.? But then what???

Snowden would probably have to resubmit the asylum application he allegedly withdrew after Russia?s President Vladimir Putin said he could only stay if he stopped leaking U.S. intelligence secrets.

An asylum application would be the start of a long-term headache for Russia which Putin seems keen to avoid. If Snowden choses to stay here in Moscow, Putin would be forced to choose between handing the whistle-blower to U.S. prosecutors ? and risk looking weak in the eyes of his Russian voters???or give Snowden sanctuary, damaging already-strained relations with Washington.

??Right now, for example, there?s an intensified relationship between U.S. and Russian security services focused on Dagestan and counter-terrorism, leading up to the Sochi Olympics, ? explained Lukyanov. ??The Kremlin and the Russian security community wouldn?t want to derail everything because of this Snowden guy.??

This lose-lose proposition seems to have forced Putin to consider a third option ? playing like Snowden isn?t there and hoping he leaves as soon as possible ? preferably before September when President Barack Obama is due in Moscow for the G-20 summit meeting of world leaders.

The Russian newspaper Kommersant, quoting sources close to the State Department, reported Monday that Obama may cancel his G-20 trip if Snowden remains in Russia.

It is unlikely Snowden will be welcomed. Alexei Pushkov, a lawmaker believed to have Putin?s ear, posted several comments on Twitter along the lines of the old saying ?Hate to see you go but here?s your hat and coat.? One tweet implied that Venezuela would be a good choice for Snowden because that country?s relations with Washington were already so bad that his presence there could not make things any worse.

Another tweet said: ?Venezuela is waiting for an answer from Snowden. This perhaps is his last chance to receive political asylum.??

Since Snowden arrived at Sheremetyevo airport on June 23, officials have reportedly kept him in a heavily-guarded and isolated wing of a hotel on the perimeter of the airport?s transit zone. The area is reportedly a diplomatic no-man?s land reserved for transit passengers without Russian visas. It has been described as a comfortable but sterile quasi-prison where Snowden must ask permission to walk in the corridor and never leaves the floor, but can order room service.

If Snowden choses Caracas as his future home, he?ll need to make that known to the Venezuelan government Monday. That's the deadline imposed early Sunday by the country?s Venezuela?s foreign minister.

He will also need emergency travel documents ? he is currently carrying a canceled U.S. passport ? which could be arranged in private meetings between Venezuelan and Russian officials.

And he will need an itinerary that avoids U.S. or European airspace, otherwise he may find himself grounded. That's what happened to Bolivian President Evo Morales when he was forced to land in Vienna, Austria last week and his plane was searched for Snowden.?

??If he stays here, for political reasons, for technical reasons, for bureaucratic reasons, I don?t know. That of course will be a very big problem which will overshadow all the rest,?? Lukyanov said.

Snowden has lived like an invisible man for more than two weeks. But he may be about to make his presence truly felt for Putin ??the world leader who most wants to see the back of him.

'I have trouble': Tower logs capture moments after deadly crash

Listen to control tower audio at San Francisco International Airport just as Asiana Airlines Flight #214 crashed Saturday.

By Jay Blackman and Matthew DeLuca, NBC News

?Hello, hello,? the pilot?s voice crackles over the radio moments after Asiana Airlines Flight 214 went down at San Francisco International on Saturday.

    ?I have trouble.?

The sequence of radio transmissions from the airport?s tower ? which sound strangely calm given the chaos unfolding onboard the shattered plane ? capture the immediate response of air traffic controllers and pilots after the flight went down, ripping off the plane?s tail section and mangling the fuselage.

Sources who spoke with NBC News on Saturday said that no distress call was made from the plane before landing.

?214 heavy, emergency vehicles are responding. Emergency vehicles are responding,? comes the response.

?Okay, I cannot...? the pilot starts to say, before his voice becomes incomprehensible.

Immediately, a message went out to other planes requesting that they keep clear of the San Francisco airport?s airspace, as responders sped toward the plane that witnesses said careened across the runway before coming to a stop and catching on fire.

On Sunday, Asiana Airlines announced that the two people killed in the crash were Chinese teenagers Ye Mengtuan and Wang Linjia. More than 180 people were injured in the crash. But in the immediate aftermath, no one knew how many of the 291 passengers and 16 crew members on board the crash had survived.

?Remain clear of the San Francisco air space, contact San Carlos tower,? the tower recordings from liveatc.net show.

?All runways are closed, airport is closed.?

Video recorded from inside a terminal at San Francisco International Airport captures the scene immediately after Flight 214 crashed Saturday.

About a minute after the pilot of the downed plane radioed the tower, another message went out to whoever might be listening in the crippled cockpit to let them know help was coming.

?Asiana 214 heavy, emergency vehicles are responding, we have everyone on their way.?

For the next several minutes, rescue units radio in their positions as they approach the Asiana flight.

?Everybody calm on ground. It?s going to be a while. Just hold your position and do not acknowledge,? comes another transmission ?after nearly a minute of silence.

Then, another fifty seconds later, a new voice comes across the air, reporting a sign of hope out on the runway strewn with debris.

?Yes, this is United 885. We see people and I think we should ? they need immediate attention. They?re alive and they?re walking around.?

?You said, you said people are just walking outside the airplane right now?? came the controller?s response.

?Yes, some people look like they?re struggling,? the pilot said.

Seconds later, it was clear to people on the ground that passengers had indeed climbed out of the crash that eyewitnesses said they initially thought could not possible have any survivors.

?Between the runways there are people right adjacent to the numbers. I can ? we can see about two or three people that are moving and, uh, and apparently survived.?

    ?Roger,? the controller responds.

My {Grace Filled} Mess: real rest

We're finally here. Our family is vacationing this week in Northern Michigan with my parents and brother and his family. I'm thankful for work that is flexible, house sitters back home, and family that we honestly love to be sharing a cottage with.

This has been a much anticipated and needed vacation. Work has been good but nonstop for Jamy and I. Parenting has been draining. Life has been rough lately. And rest is needed. Physical rest. Emotional rest. Even spiritual rest.

Although this week will be full of fun activities; a day trip to Mackinaw Island, the beach in Petoskey, and shopping in Harbor Springs, what I'm most looking forward to is the rest. No emails to respond to. No phone calls to answer. No household chores. This week will be full of reading for fun, playing card games with my family, staying up late with good conversation, and relaxing in the hot tub. Blissful.

But this only happens about once a year for our family. I'm thankful I was taught early as a young mama that I needed to carve out these times of rest into my daily life rather than just a scheduled time away from home once or twice a year.

A run after the family is up and out of the house.

Taking advantage of nap time with coffee and a good book.

Making the time for a doing my own pedicure.

Time spent with Jesus after the kids go to bed.

Good conversation with Jamy that's more about our hearts than logistics.

Because let's get real. A vacation is also filled with stress: the packing and unpacking, tired kiddos and planning activities for everyone from baby to grandparents, rain that spoils plans, and driving. Everywhere. For days on end.

And if I'm honest, finding real rest in my real life takes way more effort. My type A personality only likes to rest when the work is done. When the house is clean, my to do list is checked off, and I feel like life has slowed down enough for me to slow down.

Rest isn't just needed on yearly vacations. It's needed in the daily rhythms of our lives. Space to rest our mind and our heart. Times to refocus when we've gotten too concerned with the things around us rather than the things that really matter.

Creating a home rather than just maintaining a household.

Sowing into our children's hearts rather than just managing their behavior.

Listening to God rather than checking off a box on the reading plan.

Refueling our hearts with what matters rather than running and striving and doing.?

Because real rest, lasting rest, is only found in resting in Christ. His finished work on the cross. Finding real peace and contentment in knowing the real work is done, even when there are dishes to be washed and emails to be written. ?

First 'Boris Bike' cyclist death in London

The 20-year-old was riding on of distinctive bicycles in Whitechapel High Street when she was involved in a collision with a? lorry.

The driver of the lorry stopped at the scene but was not arrested.

Transport for London (TfL) said it is the first fatality involving one of the hire bikes, dubbed Boris Bikes after being launched by London Mayor Boris Johnson in 2010.

Leon Daniels, TfL's managing director of surface transport, said: "Our thoughts go out to the friends and family of the female cyclist who tragically died ... following a collision with a heavy goods vehicle on Whitechapel High Street.

"We understand she was riding a Barclays Cycle Hire bike.

"TfL has a range of measures already under way to further reduce the number of collisions involving cyclists across London and we will be assisting the Metropolitan Police with their investigation into this tragic incident."

The woman was taken to Royal London Hospital after the crash, which occurred just before 6.20pm, where she was pronounced dead.

Her next of kin have yet to be informed.

The accident is believed to have occurred on Cycle Superhighway 2 outside Aldgate East underground station.

The Barclays cycle routes run from outer London to the centre and are designed to provide "safer, faster and more direct journeys into the city", according to TfL.

Four have been opened so far, with a further eight to be introduced by 2015.

Officers from the road death investigation unit at Chadwell Heath traffic garage are investigating the circumstances of the collision and any witnesses are asked to call police on 0208 597 4874.

Third Time?s A Charm: Microsoft Will Host Press Conference At Gamescom, 2013

microsoft Third Times A Charm: Microsoft Will Host Press Conference At Gamescom 2013

While the company haven?t openly confirmed their plans, it has been reported that Microsoft have contacted the Gamescom organisers to book their place among the developing crowd at Cologne, Germany. Sources have suggested that the Xbox One will be central to the conference, and the company plans to reaffirm the core message and ideology behind Microsoft?s third home console as well as addressing the Xbox 360?s European status. An official, unnamed Microsoft spokesperson had this to say:

?We?re excited to be back at Gamescom this year but we?re not announcing any further details on our plans at this time. Please stay tuned for more details.?

Though the German trade show is better known for its software-centric focus, it seems the American developer will take the opportunity ? for the third time, no less ? to host a full-scale press conference in order to address the mixed messaging behind the Xbox One. What?s more, this is the first time that Microsoft have felt the need to take the stage for an hour-long presentation at Gamescom ? in comparison to Sony and EA?s annual conferences ? and it will be interesting to see how the company recovers audience perception.

A lot has happened since E3 last month. Despite the persistent statements, online requirements and controversial digital rights management were dropped by Microsoft in order to quell the backlash. This unprecedented u-turn was a sure response to Sony?s press conference in LA, and now, with the company confirmed to take the stage at Cologne, Gamescom will offer a third, and surely final, opportunity for the industry giant to gain some lost ground on its chief competitor before the holiday release.

In saying that, while the microscopic focus on Xbox One will take up the majority of Microsoft?s public address, the company are also poised to touch on the Xbox 360 ? including exploring methods to secure the console?s footing in certain EU territories. Territories that have been dominated by Sony hitherto. Needless to say, Gamescom will act as another mile marker on the quickly diminishing road to next-gen. And a crucial one at that.

A firm release date? Another chance to woo the gaming community, perhaps? What do you think, will Microsoft be able to steer the Xbox One back on course at Gamescom? Let us know below.

The Many Benefits of Yoga Stretching - Natural Holistic Health Blog

The Many Benefits of Yoga Stretching

Stretching your schedule to fit your yoga time in could ultimately make you much more productive, as well as greatly improve your health and fitness level, which would add an element of relaxation to that schedule itself!

If these sound like things you?d say if someone suggested a yoga class to you, then you need to read on and find out why doing yoga is exactly the extra thing you should stretch your busy schedule to include ?

    Stretching to boost that body

Despite the fact that many of us feel like we spend the day rushing about, the truth is that we are spending far too much time at our computers, desks and work stations or sitting about on uncomfortable commuter journeys, all of? which leave us susceptible to short-term body aches, pains and niggles and long-term posture damage.?

A yoga class offers the opportunity to remedy aches and pains from a tense, sedentary body which has been hunched over a desk or computer for too long ?

In the short term: those aches will diminish as the muscles relax and are stretched rather than spasm and cramp in response to tension.

In the long term: as muscles respond, relax and repair, posture will improve overall, reducing the risk of further injury from still needing to be at that computer for work.? You would also find that your core strength improves and your body firms up as a result of the sessions, all of which also strengthens your body?s resistance to prolonged posture damage. ?

Oh and that other cost of the short-term, long-term damage to our bodies, the cost to our pockets??

Yoga instructor training includes extensive modules on anatomy, so if you do have specific problem areas your yoga instructor will know which stretches will be the most beneficial; believe me, a weekly yoga class run by a fully qualified yoga instructor is actually far cheaper than a series of visits to a chiropractor!

The Many Benefits of Yoga Stretching Stretching to expand that mind

A brain that?s constantly buzzing with activity, deadlines, schedules and to-do lists will quickly become fatigued.?

Add to this any work stress and overtime and your brain can rapidly show signs of running down into a burn-out: confusion, poor memory and a general inability to think clearly are all signs of a brain that?s becoming overwhelmed and overtired by constant activity.

Yoga offers the chance to give to relax and stretch our busy brains.? It?s not about stretching out to consider the meaning of life or the universe (unless you want to) but it is about putting that work-brain on hold for a moment and just letting your brain unwind, your mind wander and maybe even find yourself in there!??

When was the last time you were able to set your mind free in this way?

    Stretching to achieve balance

Within our busy lives, most of us end up doing extra work or spend time thinking about work as we busily schedule our other, domestic, life around it.?

As a result, our domestic lives often mirror our work schedules because we?re trying to organize and carry out all of those domestic have-tos amongst our paid work, leaving us in a situation of very little life / work balance ? even when we?re not actually at work.?

All of this adds up to stress and an imbalance which reduces our performance as well as our well-being in all aspects of our lives.

The Many Benefits of Yoga Stretching By contrast, time spent at a yoga class is time set aside from all demands, where both body and mind can regain some balance before the next onslaught of either domestic or work activity.

Whilst these holistic benefits can again be felt very quickly, often after just one class, it?s the long-term benefits of yoga classes, including that improved posture, time to press pause on the brain and bring back a sense of balance to your life which really makes that extra effort to do it worthwhile.?

When you consider it that way, stretching that schedule to fit your yoga time in could ultimately make you much more productive, which would add an element of relaxation to that schedule itself!? So, ready to schedule in some yoga and you time, now?

(AP) ? Michael Oren, Israel's ambassador to the U.S., is stepping down after more than four years on the job, Israel's Embassy in Washington announced Friday.

Oren, 58, said he'll finish his term this fall. He said he'd continuing serving the people of Israel but didn't specify in what capacity.

"Israel and the United States have always enjoyed a special relationship and, throughout these years of challenge, I was privileged to take part in forging even firmer bonds," Oren said in a statement.

An American-born academic who taught at several universities, Oren moved to Israel in 1979 and enlisted in the paratroopers brigade. Before being tapped in 2009 by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and then-Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman to be Israel's envoy to the U.S., Oren had volunteered as a military liaison officer, briefing reporters during Israel's offensive that year against Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip.

A frequent face on Sunday morning news shows and at Washington-area synagogues, Oren may have had a diminished role as a direct messenger between the two countries due to the perception that he was outside of Netanyahu's inner circle, said Aaron David Miller, the Woodrow Wilson Center scholar who was a Mideast negotiator under six U.S. secretaries of state.

"Oren was last in a series of Israel-U.S. ambassadors that neither the president nor the secretary of state nor the prime minister really utilized," Miller said. "They all had their own channels."

The Israeli Embassy in Washington would not comment Friday on who the next ambassador will be or when a replacement will be named.

But the likely favorite to replace Oren is longtime Netanyahu adviser Ron Dermer, an American-born Israeli and former Republican activist, according to Israeli media and several individuals in the U.S. closely following the U.S-Israel relationship. The individuals were not authorized to discuss Dermer's plans publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

If selected, Dermer could irk the left-leaning wing of the American Jewish community due to his close ties to the hawkish Netanyahu. On the other hand, those ties could make him a more effective envoy if he's perceived by American officials as speaking credibly and with authority on behalf of Netanyahu's government.
